The Standard '50s is the Les Paul at its most unapologetic: a fully solid mahogany body with no weight relief, a carved AA figured maple top, a chunky '50s neck and a pair of Burstbuckers — all the ingredients of the late-'50s original, minus the vintage price tag and the worries. 2021 sits squarely in the sweet spot of the modern Gibson era: since the 2019 relaunch, the Nashville factory has tightened quality control considerably, every guitar is PLEK'd and set up before it leaves the factory, and the figured tops Gibson has been putting on the Standard '50s in this period are remarkably generous. A 2021 build combines that improved consistency with the model's most tradition-conscious spec: rosewood fingerboard with trapezoid inlays, ABR-1 bridge with lightweight aluminum stop bar, hand-wired electronics with Orange Drop capacitors and a thin nitrocellulose finish that lets the wood breathe and age the way a Les Paul should.
What strikes me most about this particular example is the top. AA-figured maple is always nice on paper, but this one really performs: depending on the angle of the light, the flame ranges from deep 3D chat to a soft, silky shimmer, and the Heritage Cherry Sunburst shifts noticeably towards pink in warmer light — a subtle, beautiful effect that photos only partly capture. It is one of those tops that keeps surprising you every time you take it out of the case.
The calibrated Burstbucker 1 and 2 pickups with their Alnico II magnets nail the early PAF character: warm, vocal mids, clear highs and plenty of punch when you dig in, cleaning up beautifully when you roll back the volume. The '50s neck profile is substantial but comfortably rounded rather than clubby, and the 12" radius with medium jumbo frets makes even big bends feel effortless. This is the classic recipe — nothing exotic, nothing missing, and it works exactly as well as it has for the past seven decades.
This example is in excellent condition, with only very light signs of use — mainly a few barely visible hairline scratches on the back of the body, which the nitro finish forgives instantly. It is fully original and comes with its original Gibson hard-shell case and accessory kit.
